Shrine of the Blessed Mother

MARY, MOTHER OF GOD

Pray for us...

This statue of our Blessed Mother
was made possible by the generous gifts
of the parishioners and friends of
Saint Marguerite Bourgeoys Parish.
Especially:

MRS. NATALIE M. DIBELLA AND FAMILY

THE SAMUEL FREEMAN CHARITABLE TRUST

Dedicated Sunday May 10, 1998 by: Rev. Albert D. Audette Jr., Pastor;
Rev. Brian P. Gannon, Parochial Vicar and Deacon Louis F. Howe.

Father Audette blessed this gracious shrine to Our Lady in the ancient ceremony that invoked memories of the recent blessing of the Church's other new statue of St. Marguerite Bourgeoys by the Most Reverend Edward M. Egan, Bishop of Bridgeport, earlier that same year.

The statue of Mary, located in the center of a circle turn-around in front of the church, is a 5' 2" statue of white Carrara marble, hand carved especially for St. Marguerite Church in Italy. It stands on a 5-ton base of solid green-gray slate, surrounded by a circle of small white marble stones. What makes the scene so tranquil, in sight and sound, is the gushing water that flows through the center of the great slate rock and cascades over its 12- by 10-foot surface to splash down rugged and craggy edges into a hidden basin to cycle back. Sparkling in the sun, the statue, rock and cascading water is a prayerful spot that beckons passers-by to a moment of prayer.

Donations by parishioners and friends of St. Marguerite Church made it all possible, as did the contributions of time and material by local firms. The 5-ton rock of slate donated by Vermont Structural Slate Co., was prepared and made available by Valley Marble and Slate Corp. of New Milford. Don Perley Excavation, Eastern Precast Co., Inc., and Rick's Water Service, all of Brookfield, donated materials and helped keep costs down.

Father Audette sees in the project the warmth and loving cooperation of his Parish community. The shrine not only enhances the church grounds but it fulfills its primary purpose of calling parishioners and visitors to prayer and meditation as they visit the lovely statue of Mary poised above silvery, splashing water.
